Thiruvananthapuram: Taxi workers across Kerala have announced an indefinite boycott of app-based ride services beginning tomorrow, protesting against the recent anti-worker policies of Uber.

The strike, led by the Kerala State Online Taxi Drivers Union, demands a rollback of the increased commission rates and the assurance of a minimum wage for drivers. Union leaders say Uber currently charges a commission of 25 to 30 percent per ride, leaving drivers with insufficient earnings.

Services are expected to be disrupted in major cities across the state from tomorrow morning. As part of the protest, drivers plan to switch off the Uber app in cities including Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode.

Union representatives argue that rising fuel prices and escalating vehicle maintenance costs have made it increasingly difficult for taxi drivers to sustain their livelihoods under the current commission structure. They also allege that Uber is failing to ensure payment of the minimum wage prescribed by the government.

Labour organisations have warned that the agitation will be intensified if authorities do not step in to address the issue and find a solution to their plight.
