Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government is exploring the possibility of lowering fitness fee rates for motor vehicles in the state. The move comes in response to the central government’s decision to increase these fees by up to ten times. Transport Minister K B Ganesh Kumar is expected to announce the extent of the reduction after the local body elections.
Previously, there was a single, uniform fee for vehicles older than 15 years. The central government has now revised this structure and introduced category-wise fees. Under the new system, vehicles over 10 years old will be required to pay higher charges for fitness certification. The revised fee slabs are based on vehicle age: 10–15 years, 15–20 years, and above 20 years.
The state government, noting that the steep increase would place a burden on ordinary citizens, has decided to intervene. In an interview with a private channel, the minister confirmed that measures are being taken to reduce the fee. Once the election code of conduct is lifted, the department will introduce the revised rates.
