Kochi: As the harvesting festival Onam approaches, the Ernakulam district administration has intensified efforts to ensure the availability of essential commodities in the open market and prevent any unjustified price hikes. A special squad comprising officials from six key departments has been formed to monitor market activities and enforce strict regulations.

The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by District Collector G. Priyanka. The squad includes representatives from the Revenue, Civil Supplies, Legal Metrology, Food Safety, Local Self-Government, and Police departments. Their main focus will be on identifying and preventing black marketing, hoarding, food adulteration, and irregularities in weighing and measuring instruments.

The squad will conduct surprise inspections at petrol pumps, LPG agencies, wholesale and retail markets, vegetable stalls, and hotels. These inspections aim to ensure fair trade practices and protect consumers from being exploited during the festive rush.

Given the increased demand for vegetables and other festive ingredients during Onam, the Collector urged traders to ensure early procurement and consistent supply of goods. This proactive approach is expected to help stabilize prices and maintain market discipline during the season.

Key Guidelines Issued to Traders and Establishments:

  • All shops and hotels must prominently display price lists.

  • Legally compliant bills must be issued to customers for all purchases.

  • Wholesale dealers are required to maintain proper records of stock and sales.

  • Stock levels and pricing must align with general market trends to avoid suspicion of malpractice.

  • All commercial establishments must strictly adhere to green protocol regulations.

  • The sale and use of plastic products, including plastic leaves, cups, and plates, are to be avoided.

  • Waste must be properly segregated at the source to ensure efficient disposal and environmental hygiene.

The district administration has made it clear that non-compliance with these guidelines will invite strict action. With these proactive steps, authorities aim to ensure a fair, safe, and environmentally responsible Onam celebration for all residents of Kochi.
