New York: FIFA has announced a complete ban on bottles at all venues for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a last-minute reversal of its earlier position that had permitted empty, transparent plastic bottles of up to one litre. The decision, outlined in updated stadium conduct regulations, is aimed at preventing injuries and security incidents caused by objects being thrown inside stadiums.
The ban extends beyond bottles to include cups, jars, cans, and all other sealed containers. Liquids exceeding 100 ml are also prohibited. Baby milk and medically prescribed liquids are exempt. Fans will be able to purchase drinking water inside stadiums at prices comparable to those charged at other events held at the same venues, FIFA said. Cooling tents and hydration stations will be set up outside stadiums to assist fans, particularly given the intense heat expected at venues across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The ban has drawn significant criticism from fans and health experts, especially given the summer heat conditions at host venues.
Tournament Schedule
The opening match takes place on Thursday, June 11, at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, where hosts Mexico face South Africa (June 12, 12:30 am IST). The schedule is as follows — group stage: June 11–27; Round of 32: June 28–July 3; Round of 16: July 4–7; quarter-finals: July 9–11; semi-finals: July 14–15; third-place play-off: July 18 in Miami; and the final on Sunday, July 19, at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, USA.
