Kollam: The CPI M state conference resolution urges the people of India to unite – including nationalist forces, workers, and peasants – to build a strong, people- driven movement for the preservation of the public sector and the safeguarding of the nation’s wealth from the clutches of privatisation.

The Modi government is relentlessly attempting to dismantle public sectors across India. The privatisation of public enterprises was initiated under the Congress -led UPA government but has been zealously accelerated by the BJP. Under Narendra Modi's leadership, approximately 70% of public sector assets have been sold off. This policy has led to widespread opposition, with left-wing parties, farmers, and workers launching protests across the nation against the government’s blatant embrace of globalisation, liberalisation, and privatisation.

These policies, which were implemented with great speed by the BJP government, have been met with growing resistance, and the pace of privatisation has significantly slowed down due to these protests. Since Modi assumed power in 2014, assets worth ₹5 lakh crore have been privatised, raising approximately ₹50,000 crore annually.

The attack on the public sector has not been confined to industries alone; the Modi government has also targeted critical production sectors. The government has decided to sell off assets in key sectors such as roads, railways, and the electrical transmission system through the National Monetisation Pipeline (NMP). Additionally, the introduction of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) has paved the way for increased private sector involvement in the country’s state affairs.

In an alarming move, the government has handed over key production and maintenance responsibilities to private companies, including the exploitation of natural resources. Specific laws have been enacted to facilitate private sector exploitation of natural resources like sand mining and deep-sea excavation, allowing multi-billionaire private firms to loot minerals from the seas.

The policies of the Modi government are nothing short of a severe form of treason, as they echo the exploitative practices of colonial-era imperialism. The relentless push towards privatisation is pushing the Indian people into a state of servitude, reminiscent of the shameful colonial past. Having ascended to power through elections, the Modi government is now stripping the nation of its wealth, reviving the colonial-era practices of exploitation.
