New Delhi: CPI M Rajya Sabha MP Dr. V Sivadasan on Wednesday submitted a notice under Rule 267 seeking suspension of scheduled business in the Upper House to discuss recent tariff actions by the United States targeting Indian exports.
In his notice, Sivadasan described the issue as “grave and urgent,” warning that the imposition of tariffs poses a significant threat to India’s export sector and endangers the livelihoods of millions of workers, farmers, and small-scale producers.
“India, as a sovereign nation, must have the right to frame independent trade and regulatory policies in the interest of its people,” the MP said, cautioning against external pressures from powerful countries acting on behalf of multinational corporations.
The United States has recently introduced or proposed tariff measures on certain Indian goods, citing trade imbalances and regulatory concerns. The matter has drawn sharp responses from sections of India’s political leadership and industry stakeholders.
The Rajya Sabha secretariat has yet to take a decision on admitting the notice.
