Sitapur: A newly constructed water tank under the Jal Jeevan Mission collapsed in Uttar Pradesh's on Thursday afternoon, officials said. The incident took place in Chunka village of Mahmudabad area, though no casualties have been reported so far, police said.
The tank, constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 531.50 lakh, had been operational for the past two months and was supplying water to the village. Locals alleged that the structure fell due to poor quality construction, and claimed that substandard materials were used during the building process.
The sudden collapse has intensified public anger, with villagers demanding a thorough inquiry and accountability from the authorities involved. Many questioned the lack of oversight and transparency in infrastructure projects implemented under central schemes.
As of now, the local administration has not issued an official statement regarding the collapse, and no formal investigation has been announced.
This is not the first such incident in Sitapur district. In a similar case last year, a water tank constructed under the same scheme in Chitahala village of the Maholi constituency collapsed during its trial run, raising serious concerns about engineering standards and administrative negligence. The recurrence of such failures within a short span has intensified scrutiny on the implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission in rural Uttar Pradesh.
Villagers in Chunka have demanded immediate inspection of similar projects in nearby areas to prevent further mishaps and to ensure public safety and proper use of public funds.
