Special Squads Intensify Checks to Prevent Pilgrim Exploitation in Sabarimala

Sabarimala: With the annual pilgrimage season underway at the Lord Ayyappa temple, enforcement teams have intensified inspections at major commercial areas in Sabarimala and Pampa to prevent vendors from exploiting pilgrims. The checks are being coordinated by officials from the Legal Metrology, Civil Supplies, Health, and Revenue departments.
So far, a total of 13,000 rupees in penalties has been collected for violations. Officials said the inspections are targeting issues such as unhygienic food preparation, use of unsealed weighing instruments, under-measurement of items, absence of proper product labelling, overcharging above MRP, and price tampering. After receiving complaints of steep pricing, hoarding, and adulteration, authorities have instructed shops to display price lists clearly and ensure that no extra amount is demanded from pilgrims.
Establishments operating without a valid food safety licence or found with other irregularities will also face strict action, officials said. Sabarimala opened on November 16 for the 41-day Mandalam-Makaravilakku pilgrimage season, which is expected to draw devotees from across the world.
