Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday responded strongly to the allegations against Congress MLA Rahul Mamkootathil, stating that society views the issue with utmost seriousness.
“The general sentiment among people is that a person facing such grave allegations should not continue as an MLA. Yet, he persists in holding the position. This is not an isolated case, several disturbing incidents have come to light,” the CM said.
He added that the allegations of forcing an abortion and threatening to kill the mother of the unborn child amount to a criminal offence. “Public representatives are expected to uphold dignity and morality in society. While politics has witnessed controversies in the past, allegations of this nature are unprecedented. Strict action is necessary in such cases,” he remarked.
The Chief Minister also pointed out divisions within the Congress party itself over the issue. “Many senior Congress leaders have publicly voiced dissatisfaction. They have lived respected political lives, always upholding moral standards despite ideological differences. Their concern reflects the pain of seeing political morality eroded by cases like this,” he said.
Vijayan alleged that certain leaders had attempted to downplay or mishandle the matter. “Now, opposition leader V D Satheeshan is seen shielding the accused. Instead of addressing the gravity of the charges, he is losing his temper and making unreasonable remarks. Even his senior colleagues in Congress have expressed disapproval. This is not just about one individual, the Congress leadership has failed to act appropriately against Rahul. His actions insult both politics and party workers,” he added.
The Chief Minister concluded by stating that legal procedures will take their course. “We hope this ends with one person and does not extend to others. Whatever action is legally required will be taken,” he affirmed.
