Swell Surge Warning

The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has warned of possible coastal flooding along the Kanyakumari coast due to the swell surge phenomenon. High waves measuring 1.2–1.4 metres are likely until 8.30 am on October 20, 2026.

Fisherfolk and coastal residents have been advised to remain vigilant due to the risk of coastal flooding.

Safety Precautions

1. As coastal flooding may intensify, people should move away from vulnerable areas and relocate as directed by the authorities.

2. Avoid taking small boats and vessels out to sea during this period.

3. During the swell surge and periods of high waves, bringing fishing vessels ashore can be as dangerous as launching them into the sea. Therefore, avoid both launching and bringing vessels ashore when waves intensify.

4. All activities centred on beaches, including tourism, should be completely avoided until the INCOIS warning is withdrawn.

5. Fishing vessels, including boats and small craft, should be securely moored at harbours. Maintaining a safe distance between vessels can help prevent collisions. Fishing equipment should also be secured.

6. Avoid trips to beaches and recreational activities in the sea entirely.

7. Remain especially vigilant because of the possibility of coastal erosion.
