Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across Kerala in the coming days, with red alerts issued for five northern districts. The intensified weather is attributed to a cyclonic circulation over northern Karnataka and the Telangana–Rayalaseema region, along with strong westerly winds prevailing over the state.
The IMD has warned of isolated extremely heavy rainfall between June 14 and 16, and very heavy rainfall at isolated places till June 17. Wind speeds may also increase, reaching up to 50–60 kmph in several areas.
In view of the forecast, red alerts have been declared in Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts—indicating a high probability of extremely heavy downpour.
Orange alerts, which denote very heavy rainfall, are in place for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Palakkad. Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Alappuzha have been placed under yellow alert, indicating chances of heavy rainfall at isolated locations.
The IMD has detailed the district-wise alerts for the next three days:

On June 15, red alert is in place for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. Orange alert has been issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Palakkad.
On June 16, red alert continues in Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad. Orange alert is extended to Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. Yellow alert remains in place for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Alappuzha.
On June 17, Malappuram and Kozhikode remain under red alert. Orange alert has been issued for Wayanad, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Alappuzha continue to be under yellow alert.
The IMD has urged the public to remain cautious and follow safety instructions, particularly in areas under red and orange alerts, as heavy rainfall may lead to localised flooding, waterlogging, and disruptions in transport and daily activities.
