Thiruvananthapuram: Fake versions of a widely used asthma medication have been seized by the Drugs Intelligence Wing in a coordinated crackdown across the state. Counterfeit batches of SEROFLO Rotacaps 250 Inhaler, a product of Cipla Ltd, were recovered during simultaneous inspections conducted in Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur, and Kozhikode. The value of the seized drugs is estimated to be over two lakh.

Health Minister Veena George had earlier directed officials to take strict action against the sale of counterfeit medicines. Acting on this directive, the Drugs Controller launched statewide inspections, during which the fake products were identified. Authorities said the investigation will now be extended to other states to trace the full supply chain.

The probe revealed that certain pharmacies had purchased and stocked the counterfeit inhalers for sale. Legal action has been initiated against Aashwas Pharma in Balaramapuram, Thiruvananthapuram, and Med World Pharma in Poongunnam, Thrissur. Cases have been registered, and the State Drugs Controller has confirmed that stringent measures, including cancellation of drug licences, will be taken against the establishments involved.

Officials said the investigation into the counterfeit drug network will continue intensively. Traders sourcing medicines from outside the state have been instructed to maintain complete documentation—from the manufacturer to the retailer—and present them during inspections. Pharmacies found storing medicines without proper records or in violation of regulations will face cancellation of their drug licence, the Drugs Controller warned.
