Thiruvananthapuram: Following revelations by Kerala Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) leader and former Thiruvananthapuram district president M.S. Kumar. Kumar, who also served as the president of the Thiruvithamkoor Cooperative Society, alleged that senior BJP leaders at both the State and district levels availed loans worth around Rs. 1 crore from the cooperative and failed to repay them, pushing the society into a severe financial crisis.
According to Kumar, a State-level leader from Thiruvananthapuram city alone defaulted on a loan of Rs. 40 lakh, while another leader failed to repay Rs. 35 lakh. A third leader, reportedly cultivated by the BJP to strengthen ties with the Christian community, also owes a substantial amount.
Despite repeated appeals, no senior leader, including State president Rajeev Chandrasekhar, has intervened to resolve the issue, Kumar said. He warned that the names of the defaulters would soon be made public if no action was taken.
Kumar’s Facebook post exposing the alleged irregularities has triggered a crisis within the party’s Thiruvananthapuram unit. He claimed that about 90 per cent of those who took loans and failed to repay were BJP functionaries, many of whom had contested in municipal corporation and Assembly elections.
The post has also drawn attention to the recent suicide of Thirumala Anil, BJP councillor and president of the Thiruvananthapuram District Farm Tour Cooperative Society. Kumar alleged that Anil took his life after being pushed into financial distress caused by the party leaders’ loan defaults. “I am in a similar situation,” Kumar added.
Before his death, Anil had reportedly informed Rajeev Chandrasekhar of the crisis, but no steps were taken to recover the dues or support the cooperative, Kumar alleged.
