Trade Unions Lead Nationwide Strike, Draw Widespread Support Across Sectors

Workers are on strike, staging a sit-in at the entrance of a roofing company in Assam’s Kamrup Metropolitan District.
New Delhi: A nationwide general strike called by central trade unions, including the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), is currently underway. The strike has been announced as a warning to the Modi government against the anti-people policies and the alleged handover of the country’s resources to corporate interests.
The strike began at midnight on Wednesday and will continue until midnight on Thursday. Crores of employees are participating in the protest, including workers from central and state government departments, as well as the insurance, coal, electricity, and defence sectors. Farmers and agricultural labourers are also at the forefront of the agitation.
The strike is set to become an important chapter in the history of protests in India. Political parties, including the CPI(M) and several others, have extended their support to the nationwide protest.
