5.66 Lakh Women and Children Have Received Help from Mitra Helpline

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala State Women’s Development Corporation’s Mitra 181 helpline has so far supported 5.66 lakh women and children through calls received since its inception, with full intervention delivered in nearly two lakh cases. The helpline has expanded over the years to ensure more women across the state can access immediate support and information through the toll-free number 181, available 24 hours a day.
Health Minister Veena George urged all women to remember the helpline number and use it whenever necessary. She said the State Government and Women’s Development Corporation ensure confidentiality and stand beside women seeking safety, justice, and support during difficult situations. The service provides counselling, legal guidance, and emergency protection.
As part of this support system, callers are directed to relevant agencies such as the police, hospitals, ambulance services, or other welfare departments through a structured referral process. The helpline is open to women facing domestic or other forms of violence, as well as adolescent girls and transgender individuals.
The service handles an average of 300 calls a day, most of which relate to emergencies or requests for information. A team of 12 trained women staff the helpline in three shifts. All personnel possess advanced qualifications in law or social work and receive continuous professional training. Mitra 181 remains committed to ensuring the safety, dignity, and timely support for women, Minister Veena George said.
