Argentina to Play Friendly Matches in Kochi This November

Calicut: The World Cup-winning Argentina football team is set to play in Kochi during their visit to Kerala. The squad, including Lionel Messi, is expected to arrive. After a thorough inspection by an expert committee, Nehru Stadium in Kochi has been finalized as the venue. Initially, the Greenfield Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram was under consideration.

However, since Greenfield is primarily a cricket stadium, converting it for a football match in a short time posed challenges. Consequently, Kerala chose Kochi — a venue that regularly hosts ISL matches — for this much-anticipated game.

Argentina is expected to arrive between November 15 and 18, with matches being considered for the 16th and 17th. Australia will be the opponent. Discussions are ongoing to organize two matches. There is also talk of involving a third team. The GCDA and the state government are working together to prepare the Kochi stadium for the event.

The idea of Argentina visiting Kerala arose soon after their 2022 Qatar World Cup victory. As a token of gratitude to fans worldwide, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) expressed thanks — and Kerala was part of that appreciation. Kerala’s Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman sent a congratulatory message to the AFA, and the willingness to visit Kerala was expressed in their reply.

With determination and proactive support from the government and relevant departments, the dream is becoming a reality. The backing of sponsors has also played a major role. This marks the second time Messi and the Argentine team will visit India — the first being in 2011 when they played a friendly against Venezuela in Kolkata.
