Dubai: The UAE Cyber-security Council has issued a warning about the serious threats posed by using unsecured free public Wi-Fi networks. The council revealed that over 12,000 breaches have been recorded since the beginning of the year through such networks alone.
According to the council, round 35% of the total cyber attacks reported in the UAE involved hackers stealing passwords, banking information, and personal data. The public has been advised to avoid sensitive transactions while using public Wi-Fi, enable multi-factor authentication, and use trusted security tools.
While these networks may appear attractive to consumers due to their speed and free access, they are often not secure enough and open the door to fraud and hacking activities, explained Dr. Mohammed Al
Kuwaiti, Head of the UAE Cyber-security Council.
Three Precautions to Follow When Using Public Wi-Fi:
Use a trusted VPN application that encrypts the user's connection.
Enable “Safe Browsing” features to block suspicious websites.
Avoid accessing sensitive services such as banking accounts and personal email while using open Wi-Fi.
