Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President Sunny Joseph on Sunday said the party had taken a “respectable stand” in the Rahul Mamkoottathil issue by expelling him from the organisation. His remarks, however, drew criticism as he avoided direct answers to media questions.
Sunny Joseph said Rahul’s resignation before the allegations surfaced was itself a “respectable act” and pointed out that senior leaders, including the Opposition Leader, KPCC President, Working Presidents and UDF Convenor, had discussed the matter before arriving at a unanimous decision. He reiterated that no complaint or case had been registered against Rahul and dismissed calls for his resignation from the Assembly as “without basis.”
Despite repeated queries, the KPCC president did not provide clear responses, limiting himself to general remarks. Critics observed that the leadership appeared more intent on defending its decision-making process than addressing the issue directly.
Although Sunny Joseph underlined that the Congress has acted “in line with its values” by expelling Rahul from the party, his comments were widely seen as a move to manage the controversy rather than a decisive step towards accountability.
