21st CPI(M) Party Congress: Strengthening the Party and Expanding Influence

The 21st Party Congress of the CPI(M) was held in Visakhapatnam from April 14 to 19, 2015, during the tenure of the Narendra Modi-led Sangh Parivar government. The Congress approved a political resolution focused on strengthening the party to lead struggles for improving the living standards of working people across all sections of society.
General Secretary Prakash Karat presented the political resolution, emphasizing the need to enhance the CPI(M)’s independent strength and reinforce its Marxist-Leninist ideological foundation. Additionally, an organizational resolution was adopted, reviewing the party’s work and setting the stage for a special plenum by the end of 2015 to strengthen party structures and expand its influence among grassroots workers and youth. Several other resolutions were passed, addressing key national issues.
Sitaram Yechury was elected as the new General Secretary. A 97-member Central Committee was formed, incorporating 17 new members and 14 women. A 16-member Politburo was also elected.
