Kolkata: A group identified as members of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) allegedly attacked a church and retreat centre at Krishnanagar Jalalkhali in Nadia district of West Bengal.

The incident took place during a four-day annual Christian prayer convention scheduled to be held from the 8th to the 11th of this month. The centre, managed by Vincentian priests from Keralam, has been hosting the annual convention peacefully without any disruption since 2008.

Prior permission had been obtained to conduct the convention. This year, too, all necessary approvals were secured from the local administration and the police.

In the evening, a group of outsiders arrived in the area and took photographs and videos. They later came with a microphone and delivered provocative and communal speeches. At the end of the speeches, the group allegedly began attacking the gathering without any provocation.

The group attempted to hoist RSS flags on the church and the cross and allegedly tried to assault people attending the convention. The attack was also carried out after the electricity supply to the area was cut off.

Although the police were called, they questioned those who had gathered peacefully to worship, according to reports.
