Chennai: Actor-turned-politician Vijay is poised to become the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu following a strong electoral performance by his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Reports indicate that he is likely to be sworn in within the next couple of days.

Vijay is expected to meet the Governor today to formally stake claim to form the government. Reports suggest that he may resign from the Tiruchirappalli East constituency, where he secured victory, with indications that actor Trisha Krishnan could be fielded in a by-election.

To secure a working majority, Vijay has reportedly sought support from the Congress. Congress is said to be open to extending support to TVK, which has emerged as the single largest party, and has reportedly demanded two ministerial berths along with key positions in boards and corporations.

However, the potential realignment has sparked concerns about the future of the broader opposition alliance, INDIA bloc. The stance of other parties, including the Left parties and the Muslim League, is expected to become clear soon. There are also unconfirmed reports that Vijay has explored the possibility of support from the AIADMK.

In the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, a majority requires 118 seats. TVK has secured 108 seats. If Vijay vacates his seat, the party’s effective tally would drop to 107. With Congress’ five seats, the alliance would reach 112. Parties such as the CPI(M), CPI, VCK, and Muslim League hold two seats each, making their support crucial for government formation.

While the numbers suggest a possible coalition, clarity is still awaited on whether all these parties will extend their backing to Vijay’s bid for power.
