‘Rarest of Rare’: Death Sentence for UP Couple in 33 Child Sexual Abuse Cases

Lucknow: A court has sentenced death penalty for a couple from Uttar Pradesh in multiple cases of brutal sexual assault on children. The special POCSO court in Banda, Uttar Pradesh, has found that the case involving Ram Bhavan and Durgavati is a rare one and has sentenced the culprits to death.

33 children aged from three years and above were subjected to brutal sexual assault by the couple. The order also states that a compensation of Rs 10 lakh should be paid to the family of each child who was subjected to the cruelty of the accused.

The investigation team has charged serious charges of sexual assault, aggravated sexual assault, child pornography and criminal conspiracy. Ram Bhavan, who worked as a junior engineer in the Irrigation Department, lured the children using online video games and offering money and gifts. Their brutal acts took place in Banda and Chitrakoot in Uttar Pradesh between 2010 and 2020. The CBI registered a case in the assaults in October 2020. The charge sheet was filed in February 2021.

The CBI investigation has revealed shocking details of the brutality of the accused. As per reports, many children suffered serious injuries to their private parts. Some also suffered eye injuries. Some had to stay in the hospital for years. Most of the children are mentally traumatised following the assaults.
