Delhi Riots Conspiracy Case: Umar Khalid Granted Interim Bail

New Delhi: Activist Umar Khalid, who has been imprisoned as an accused in the Delhi riots conspiracy case, has been granted interim bail. The Delhi trial court allowed bail for two weeks, from December 16 to 29. He was granted relief on a personal bond of 20,000 rupees and two sureties of the same amount. Parole is available only after five years.

Umar Khalid approached the court for interim bail from December 14 to 29, stating that his sister’s wedding is scheduled for December 27 and that his presence is essential for family ceremonies and preparations.

Umar Khalid was arrested by the Delhi Police in September 2020. He was charged under sections related to criminal conspiracy, riots, unlawful assembly, and UAPA. Multiple FIRs under sedition and UAPA have been registered against him in various states. He is a former JNU student.

Other accused in the case include Tahir Hussain, Umar Khalid, Khalid Saifi, Ishrat Jahan, Miran Haider, Gulfish Fatima, Shif-ur-Rahman, Asif Iqbal Tanha (granted bail in 2021), Shadab Ahmad, Tasleem Ahmad, Saleem Malik, Mohammed Saleem Khan, Athar Khan, Safura Sargar (granted bail on humanitarian grounds as she was pregnant at the time of arrest), Sharjeel Imam, Faizan Khan, Devangan Kalita (granted bail), Natasha Narwal (granted bail).

Umar Khalid has been in jail for five years without trial, accused of conspiring to incite the riots in Northeast Delhi.
