Ukraine Demands Release of Six Citizens Detained in Mizoram

New Delhi: The Ukrainian Embassy in India has protested the detention of six Ukrainian citizens in Mizoram on charges of illegally crossing the border. The case involves entering without permission and engaging in illegal activities. The six Ukrainian citizens, along with an American citizen, have been taken into custody by Indian authorities. Ukrainian Ambassador Oleksandr Polishchuk met with Indian External Affairs Secretary Sibi George to protest the detention of the citizens. Ukraine has demanded that the detainees be immediately granted consular access (permission to meet with the ambassador in person) and that they be released.
The main allegation is that the India-Myanmar border was crossed illegally. Foreigners need a special permit to enter restricted areas, such as Mizoram. However, the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs pointed out that the lack of clear signage in such areas is leading to violations due to a lack of awareness. Ukraine has also accused India of failing to officially inform them about the arrest of its citizens, which they claim is contrary to international protocols. The court has extended their custody until March 27. While information regarding the detained American citizen is available, the US Embassy has yet to respond further.
