Idukki: Thamizha Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) has entered the Mullaperiyar debate, demanding that excess water from the dam be released to Tamil Nadu. The demand was raised by TVK MLA Jagannath Mishra, who represents the Kambam constituency in the Tamil Nadu assembly.

The MLA made the remarks during a visit to Anakkal in Nedumkandam, Idukki. He argued that when water levels at the Mullaperiyar dam rise and the surplus is diverted to the Idukki reservoir, that excess should be directed to Tamil Nadu instead of being wasted.

Mishra pointed out that overflow from Mullaperiyar currently reaches the Idukki dam, from where it is eventually discharged into the Arabian Sea. He clarified, however, that he was not calling for an increase in the storage capacity of the Mullaperiyar dam itself.

The TVK MLA also urged all parties to refrain from taking any action that would cause hardship to the people of either Kerala or Tamil Nadu. He cautioned against using the Mullaperiyar issue as a political tool, adding that the people of Kerala are brothers and sisters of Tamil Nadu.
