Kolkata: A fresh flashpoint has emerged in the ongoing internal conflict within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) after debit operations of three party-linked bank accounts containing nearly Rs 440 crore were frozen following complaints from rebel legislators seeking scrutiny of the source of the funds.

As reported by PTI, the accounts, maintained with a private sector bank, have been placed under a debit freeze, restricting withdrawals and outward transactions while allowing deposits to continue.

The development comes amid an escalating battle inside the party over organisational and financial control following its defeat in the recent Assembly elections. Rival camps led by former minister Aroop Biswas and Leader of Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee have increasingly clashed over authority within the party structure.

According to PTI, ten MLAs aligned with Ritabrata Banerjee approached the cyber crime police station under the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate, demanding registration of an FIR and a detailed inquiry into the accounts and transactions linked to them.

In their complaints, the legislators questioned whether the funds had legitimate origins and sought an investigation into allegations including suspected financial irregularities, unlawful collections, diversion of public money and proceeds from alleged scams.

Party leaders loyal to TMC Supremo Mamata Banerjee acknowledged reports of the freeze but said they were awaiting official confirmation.

The financial dispute intensified days after Aroop Biswas reportedly wrote to the bank requesting that transactions be halted until the leadership issue within the party was resolved. However, Mamata loyalist MLA Kunal Ghosh said, as reported by PTI, that Biswas no longer serves as party treasurer and that Subhasish Chakraborty had been appointed to the position earlier this month.
