TVK Sweeps Tamil Nadu; Vijay's Party Wins 32 of 34 Greater Chennai Seats

Chennai: Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam has delivered one of the most stunning electoral upsets in Tamil Nadu's modern political history, routing both the DMK and AIADMK to emerge as the dominant force in the state. TVK swept 32 of the 34 Greater Chennai seats — including Chief Minister M K Stalin's own Kolathur constituency — winning over 45 per cent of the vote in an area the DMK-led alliance had swept last time. The AIADMK-led NDA performed better in rural constituencies.

TVK won 51 of the 135 seats where DMK and AIADMK directly contested each other, and picked up 16 of the 25 seats where DMK and BJP were in direct contest. The party also performed strongly in SC and ST reserved constituencies.

Youth and women voters rallied strongly behind Vijay's campaign centred on anti-corruption, employment, and education — with the slogan "Unga Vijay Naan Vare" becoming a defining battle cry.

A Long Road to Power

Vijay formally launched TVK in February 2024, but his political preparations stretch back to 2009, when he restructured his fan association into the Vijay Makkal Iyakkam. His public events through the late 2010s and early 2020s took on an increasingly political character. He criticised the Citizenship Amendment Act in 2019, and Vijay Makkal Iyakkam won most of the seats it contested in the 2021 local body elections.

His final film was blocked by the Censor Board and never released. A stampede tragedy at his Karur political rally in September 2025 that killed 41 people drew sharp criticism, but Vijay overcame the controversy to secure massive support from young voters and women on polling day.
