Bangalore: A tragic stampede at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore during a victory celebration for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the IPL 2025 has claimed the lives of eleven people, including a six- year -old child. The incident occurred at Gate Number 3, where an overwhelming crowd had gathered.
The celebration event was organised by the Congress-led Karnataka government in association with private sponsors. Officials said that around 24 others have been injured, with the death toll likely to rise.
Emergency responders were overwhelmed due to the scale of the crowd. Seven of the deceased were brought dead to Bowring Hospital in Shivajinagar, while others were rushed to Vaidehi Hospital for treatment.
The roads surrounding the stadium were choked with thousands of fans hoping to catch a glimpse of their favorite players. The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) had earlier insisted on holding a victory parade, which significantly contributed to the large turnout near the stadium.
Authorities are facing criticism for inadequate crowd control and lack of preparedness, despite knowing the potential scale of the public turnout. An inquiry is expected to be launched to investigate lapses in planning and security.
