New Delhi: Dr. V Shivadasan, MP, opposed in the Rajya Sabha the bill proposing to extend the corporate -friendly amendments made to the Water Pollution Control Act to Manipur.

He questioned why the central government is delaying elections and why there is no framework in place to restore democracy in Manipur.

Dr. Shivadasan argued that the central government is attempting to undermine the democratic rights of a state that currently has no elected government. At present, Manipur has no legislative assembly and is under central rule. In this context, making laws in the name of the people violates democratic principles and constitutes an attack on the federal structure of the Constitution.

He further stated that the government’s move is not aimed at preventing water pollution but rather at promoting it and protecting corporate interests. He noted that Delhi remains one of the most polluted cities in the world and warned that this legislation would only exacerbate environmental problems in Manipur.
