Nirmala Sitharaman's Remarks on Communists, Brittas Expunged From Rajya Sabha Record

New Delhi: Remarks made by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman against communists and CPI(M) member John Brittas have been expunged from the Rajya Sabha's official records, following an order from Chairman CP Radhakrishnan on Tuesday. The comments were made a day earlier, during Sitharaman's reply to the debate on the Taxation and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026, and had sparked a sharp confrontation between the minister and Brittas on the floor of the House.

The move came after CPI Rajya Sabha MP P Sandosh Kumar formally wrote to the Chairman, asking that the "derogatory remarks" be deleted from the record. In his letter, Kumar did not dispute the finance minister's right to challenge points raised by any member of the House, but drew a distinction between legitimate political disagreement and what he described as personal abuse or an insulting characterisation of an entire political ideology.

Terming the remarks a slur against a movement with deep roots in India's public life, Kumar asked that they be struck off in keeping with parliamentary rules and convention. His letter stated that he was seeking the expunction of the objectionable and derogatory remarks from the official Rajya Sabha records, in line with established practice, and pressed for steps to preserve the dignity of the House and the standards expected of parliamentary debate.

As the CPI's floor leader in Parliament, Kumar also pointed to what he called a disregard for the Communist movement's role in the freedom struggle. He said party activists had taken part in the independence movement, suffered imprisonment and colonial-era crackdowns, and played a part in shaping the country's democratic, labour and social movements. According to Kumar, they stood up to colonial rule with courage and conviction, making sacrifices in the cause of the nation's freedom and progress.

Nirmala Sitharaman made the remarks in Rajya sabha on Monday, while addressing the resolution seeking disapproval of the Income-Tax (Amendment) Ordinance, 2026. The finance minister made the remarks while referring to CPI(M) MP Dr John Brittas. She said, “They don’t have the courage. Communists in this country are total cowards."

With the Chairman's order, the disputed remarks have now been formally removed from parliamentary records, though the episode is likely to keep the question of decorum in legislative debate in focus when the House resumes business.
