Chennai: The Madras High Court on Friday directed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to issue a U/A certificate to actor-turned-politician Vijay’s upcoming film Jana Nayagan, clearing the way for its release.

The court passed the order on a petition filed by the film’s producers after the certification process was delayed despite the movie initially being recommended for a U/A rating. The High Court had reserved its order on January 7 after hearing arguments from both sides.

When the plea was taken up on January 6, Justice P T Asha asked the CBFC to produce a copy of the complaint alleging that the film hurt religious sentiments. The filmmakers told the court that the movie was sent for review even after an initial recommendation for U/A certification, creating uncertainty over its release, which had been fixed for January 9.

Directed by H Vinoth, Jana Nayagan features Vijay in the lead role, with Prakash Raj, Pooja Hegde, Mamitha Baiju and others in key roles. The completed film was submitted for certification on December 18. Following a screening on December 19, the censor panel reportedly suggested the removal of certain scenes and the muting of some dialogues.

The producers informed the court that all the suggested changes were implemented. However, the certificate was still not issued, prompting them to approach the High Court. The CBFC later stated that the film was referred to a revising committee following complaints that it hurt religious sentiments and portrayed the armed forces in a negative manner.

The delay led to the postponement of the planned Pongal release, resulting in heavy losses for the producers. With the High Court now directing the CBFC to issue the U/A certificate, the legal hurdle that held up the release of Jana Nayagan has been removed.
