LPU Video Denying Rape Allegations Sparks Fresh Controversy as Students Say Video Was Scripted

Jalandhar: A video released by the registrar of Lovely Professional University (LPU) to address the sexual assault allegations has triggered a new controversy, with students saying they were forced to take part in its recording and that the video was scripted.

The video features female students from the hostel where the alleged incident took place. In it, they say no such problems have occurred at the hostel. The registrar is also heard saying that baseless allegations were being made against the university. Students later came forward against the video, alleging that they had been pressured into appearing in it.

The row comes as the university has suspended regular classes for 10 days from September 28 and postponed mid-term examinations, following student protests and violence over reports that a female student had been sexually assaulted on campus.

According to reports, the student, who is from Telangana, had complained that an electrician sexually assaulted her in the girls' hostel. After receiving the complaint, the authorities sent her home and later asked other students staying in the hostel to return home as well.

Students alleged that after the assault on the female student at a campus hostel, the authorities attempted to suppress the incident and send her home instead of taking action against those responsible. Students also alleged that the university removed the wardens who were on duty at the time of the incident in an attempt to conceal the matter and prevent the truth from emerging. Police said they were examining the facts of the case.

Following the incident, students under the leadership of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and the students’ union took to the streets and blocked the Jalandhar-Phagwara national highway.

As the protest spread beyond the campus, the university announced a 10-day break and asked students to return to their hometowns. The university said students could return home during the 10-day break after consulting their parents or guardians. Those who remain on campus have been instructed to stay in hostels or their places of residence.

However, the students have decided to remain on campus and intensify their protest.
