Karur stampede: Tamil Nadu government orders judicial probe

Chennai: Lapses in organisation are being cited as the primary cause of the accident in arur stampede, says officials. The Tamil Nadu government has ordered a judicial probe into the incident and announced a relief of 10 lakh for the families of the deceased and one lakh for those who have injured. Health Minister Ma Subramanian and Minister Senthil Balaji visited both the hospital and the accident site to review the situation.


According to official reports, 39 people have lost their lives so far. Several others remain in critical condition, and the exact number of injured admitted to hospitals is yet to be confirmed. Hospital sources have warned that the death toll could climb further.


Meanwhile, CPI M Tamil Nadu state secretary P Shanmugam has urged the Madras High Court to take up the case suo motu and initiate an independent inquiry. He noted that Tamil Nadu has never witnessed such a tragic incident in the past. In its statement, the CPI M expressed deep condolences and solidarity with the grieving families of the victims.
