TVK MLA JCD Prabhakar Elected Speaker of Tamil Nadu Assembly

Chennai: JCD Prabhakar of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has been elected Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.

Prabhakar was declared elected unopposed after his was the only nomination received for the post. Pro-tem Speaker M V Karuppaiah formally announced his election.

In the recent Assembly elections, Prabhakar won from the Thousand Lights constituency by defeating Eshlian Naganathan of DMK.

Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay proposed Prabhakar’s name for the Speaker’s post. In keeping with Assembly tradition, senior leader K A Sengottaiyan and Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin congratulated the newly elected Speaker.

Prabhakar will preside over Assembly proceedings from today onward.

Meanwhile, M Ravishankar, representing Thuraiyur, was elected Deputy Speaker of the Assembly.

In a related political development, a faction of the AIADMK led by C V Shanmugam announced support for the TVK-led government. Shanmugam stated that the decision was taken in view of the party’s longstanding political differences with the DMK.
