New Delhi: Dr. V. Sivadasan M.P., through a special remark in the Rajya Sabha, demanded that the central government take special steps to fill the teaching and research vacancies in central universities and national research institutes in a timely manner. He emphasised that the reservation provisions should be strictly followed in faculty appointments, and the appointment process should be expedited.
Central universities and national research institutes play a crucial role in the country's higher education system. However, it is concerning that a large number of teaching and research positions have been vacant in these institutions for an extended period. According to information presented in the Rajya Sabha in recent years, one in four of the approved teaching posts in central universities remains vacant. He also pointed out the serious shortage of scientists, researchers, and technical staff in research institutes under various central ministries.
Dr. Sivadasan stressed that such vacancies negatively impact the quality of teaching and increase the workload of existing faculty members. Due to the shortage of permanent teachers, many institutions rely on temporary contract appointments.
Dr. Sivadasan emphasised that higher education is essential for the comprehensive development of the country and the growth of a knowledge-based economy. He urged the central government to implement transparent and efficient recruitment procedures to fill all sanctioned vacancies in central universities and research institutions promptly. He further stated that it is crucial to strictly adhere to reservation policies in faculty appointments, speed up the recruitment process, and enhance academic standards. This will help accelerate knowledge development and ensure a quality education system that meets the expectations of the country's students and researchers.
