CPI(M) Polit Buro Urges Apex Court to Reconsider Decision to Uphold Andhra HC Judgment to Deny SC Status to Those Who Converted Religion

New Delhi: The Politburo of CPI(M) has expressed strong disagreement with the Supreme Court of India's decision upholding a High Court ruling that individuals who convert to Christianity cannot be considered part of the Scheduled Caste (SC) category.

The apex court had affirmed the judgment of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, prompting the CPI(M) leadership to call for a reconsideration of the verdict.

In a statement, the Politburo argued that reservations and other benefits granted to Scheduled Castes are based on their enduring social and economic backwardness. It criticized the ruling for overlooking these ground realities and placing excessive emphasis on religious identity.

The party further stated that the judgment runs contrary to the core principles of reservation as envisioned in the Constitution. It urged that the order be reviewed and referred to a Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court for greater clarity and reconsideration.
