C J Roy, ED Witchhunt Victim and Business Tycoon, Laid to Rest Today

Bengaluru: The funeral of Confident Group Chairman C J Roy will take place today. A public viewing will be held from 10 am to 2 pm, followed by the funeral at 4 pm in Bannerghatta, Bengaluru. After the post-mortem, the body was received by his family from the mortuary at Bengaluru Boring Hospital.

The preliminary post-mortem report, released yesterday, revealed that a 6.35 mm bullet had pierced Roy’s heart and lungs and exited the body. Samples, including body tissue, have been sent for further detailed examination.

A central government agency is leading the investigation into Roy’s death. Officials, including Malayali Additional Commissioner Krishnaprasad of the Income Tax Department, who had conducted a raid at the Confident Group headquarters, are expected to be questioned. The special investigation team (SIT), established under Karnataka West Zone Joint Commissioner C Vamshikrishna, will oversee the inquiry.

Roy’s brother, C J Babu, stated that Roy had faced intense pressure from Income Tax officials and that there were no other factors contributing to his death. He emphasised that Roy had no debts or other threats. On the morning of his death, Roy reportedly mentioned the raid during a phone call. Babu added that the Income Tax officials had been present at the office for three consecutive days.

The case was initially registered by Ashok Nagar police. Following a complaint from the Confident Group requesting a detailed probe, the case was transferred to the Karnataka CID, which later set up an SIT. Statements were recorded from Roy’s family members and Confident Group employees, and his diary along with other documents were seized.

The investigation was conducted by a 10-member team led by Joint Director Krishnaprasad. The family confirmed that inspections had previously taken place at the Bengaluru office in December 2025 and that all requested documents had been provided.

Roy reportedly shot himself during the raid at the Bengaluru office on Friday. Officials said he arrived at the office around 2 pm and was questioned for about an hour. According to them, he shot himself at 3 pm after referring to documents in a room. However, employees have raised concerns, alleging that the Income Tax officials continued their search for another hour even after his death, adding an element of suspicion to the events.
