Thiruvananthapuram: Minister for Local Self-Governments, M. B. Rajesh has announced that members of the Haritha Karma Sena will receive a special Onam bonus of Rs. 1,250 each. This is an increase from last year’s festival allowance, which was Rs. 1,000.

The Minister said that this increased festival bonus is a token of appreciation for the tireless efforts of Haritha Karma Sena workers in keeping Kerala clean and waste-free. He emphasised their significant role in improving the cleanliness rankings of Kerala’s urban areas and in maintaining the overall hygiene of towns and cities across the state.

Haritha Karma Sena is a dedicated team of trained workers—mostly women—engaged in door-to-door collection, segregation, and management of non-biodegradable waste in Kerala. Formed under the Suchitwa Mission and functioning through local self-governments, the sqad plays a crucial role in Kerala's decentralised waste management system.

They collect plastic and other recyclable materials directly from households and institutions, ensure proper sorting, and facilitate responsible disposal or recycling. Beyond waste collection, they also raise awareness about sustainable practices, proper waste segregation, and environmental conservation.

By providing employment, especially to women from underprivileged backgrounds, and contributing to a cleaner, healthier Kerala, Haritha Karma Sena stands as a model for community-driven environmental action in India.
