Shigella Case Confirmed Again in Wayanad; Engineering Student Tests Positive

Kalpetta: A fresh case of Shigella infection has been confirmed in Wayanad, with a student of the Government Engineering College testing positive for the disease. Four other students from the same college have also sought medical treatment after developing symptoms.

The test result of the student, who had sought treatment a few days ago, was confirmed on Monday. Following the confirmation, the Health Department has issued an alert focusing on the Government Engineering College hostel in Mananthavady.

An emergency review meeting, chaired by the District Medical Officer (DMO), will be held on Tuesday to assess the situation and coordinate preventive measures. This is the first confirmed case of Shigella in Wayanad after a gap of one month.

Among the students who sought treatment with symptoms, one is a resident of the college hostel, while the other three stay off campus.

Following the confirmation of the infection, the Thavinhal Grama Panchayat has intensified disease surveillance and preventive measures in the area.
