One Year Without V S Achuthanandan: The Revolutionary Flame That Still Burns

A communist who always fought for people. A revolutionary star that continues to burn brightly in the hearts of the people. A leader who never bowed before adversity. A fighter in every sense of the word. It has now been one year since V S Achuthanandan passed away.

An era has become history, but its legacy remains deeply etched in Keralam's political and social consciousness. Velikkakathu Sankaran Achuthanandan was embraced by generations simply as "V S"—two letters that came to symbolize resistance, courage and unwavering commitment to the people. Even today, that place he occupies in the hearts of Malayalis remains unchanged.

The name V S came to represent an unending political struggle. His life was a journey of relentless battles for justice, equality and the rights of ordinary people. Defeats never diminished his resolve. Whenever the people found themselves in the opposition, V S became their voice. His distinctive style of speaking, measured yet forceful, was one that people listened to with hope and anticipation.

It was P Krishna Pillai who recognized the leadership potential in the young coir factory worker. At the age of just 17, V S became a member of the Communist Party in 1940. Later, as one of the founding leaders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), he played a defining role in shaping and strengthening the communist movement in Keralam.

V S stood in the front ranks of the historic Punnapra-Vayalar uprising against the independent Travancore. Throughout his political life, he remained at the forefront of struggles for the rights of workers, farmers and marginalized communities. He consistently raised his voice for gender equality and waged uncompromising battles against state repression.

He led people's movements, became the voice of the marginalized, and relentlessly campaigned for economic equality and social justice. He spearheaded land struggles and emphasized that environmental issues were inseparable from class struggles. He fought to protect land, forests, water resources, climate and the environment while firmly opposing the political agenda of religious majoritarianism. His politics consistently stood on the side of human rights and democratic values.

His passing marked the end of a significant chapter in Keralam's political history. The state witnessed an unprecedented outpouring of grief as countless people gathered to pay their last respects. Thousands stood along the roads, regardless of the hour, waiting for a final glimpse of the leader they affectionately called "Comrade." Their tears, raised fists and heartfelt slogans reflected the deep bond V S had forged with the people and spoke volumes about the meaning of his life and politics.

Keralam will not forget the name V S Achuthanandan, nor the ideals he stood for. His life, his struggles and his politics continue to inspire generations. In the hearts and minds of millions, that revolutionary sun still shines.
