Thrissur: A powerful explosion at a fireworks manufacturing unit in Mundathikode, Thrissur, has left at least three people dead, and atleast 40 people injured, with the blast reportedly audible from several kilometres away. The incident occurred at the fireworks facility owned by Mundathikode Satheesan, who holds the licence for the Thiruvambadi fireworks display — a centrepiece of the famed Thrissur Pooram — with the event's sample fireworks display scheduled for April 24.

The exact number of workers present at the facility at the time of the blast remains unclear. Police, Fire Force, and ambulances have reached the scene. The full scale of the damage is yet to be assessed.

Health Minister Veena George has directed that expert medical care be ensured for all those injured in the explosion. She has ordered Thrissur Medical College to prepare adequate treatment facilities and has ensured that sufficient ambulances, including Kaniv 108 units, are deployed to the site. Thrissur General Hospital and other nearby hospitals have also been placed on alert and directed to remain fully prepared to receive casualties.
