Swell Surge Phenomenon: Alert Issued for Kerala and Kanyakumari Coasts

Thiruvananthapuram: The National Institute of Oceanography and Marine Research (INCOIS) has issued a warning that strong waves may occur as part of the swell surge phenomenon along the coastal districts of Kerala. The districts include Thiruvananthapuram (from Kappil to Pozhiyoor), Kollam (from Alappatt to Idav), Alappuzha (from Chellanam to Azhikkal Jetty), Ernakulam (from Munambam FH to Maruvakkad), Thrissur (from Aattupuram to Kodungallur), Malappuram (from Kadalundi Nagar to Palappetti), Kozhikode (from Chombala to Ramanattukara), Kannur (from Valapattanam to New Mahe), and Kasaragod (from Kunchathoor to Kottakkunnu). The waves, ranging from 0.4 to 1.0 meters in height, may lead to coastal erosion until 11:30 PM on Monday.

In addition, the swell surge along the Kanyakumari coast is expected to generate waves ranging from 1.2 to 1.3 meters in height until 8:30 PM on Monday, increasing the possibility of coastal erosion.

Given the risk of coastal erosion, fishers and coastal residents are advised to stay alert.

Due to the likelihood of intense coastal disturbance, residents and visitors in vulnerable areas should follow local authorities' instructions and evacuate if necessary.

Small boats and fishing vessels should avoid venturing into the sea during this period.

Fishing vessels should not be launched, and boats should not be hauled in, as this can be dangerous under conditions of strong waves and swell surge.

Until INCOIS lifts the warning, all beach-related activities, including tourism, should be completely avoided.

Fishing boats and other vessels should be securely anchored in harbors for safety.

Maintain safe distances between boats to prevent accidents.

Ensure the safety of fishing gear and equipment.

Avoid all beach visits and sea-based recreational activities.

Special caution should be taken due to the potential for coastal erosion.

This warning remains in effect until further notice from INCOIS.
