Kozhikode: Muslim League worker Shimjitha Mustafa has been remanded to judicial custody for 14 days in connection with the suicide of a young man after a video alleging sexual harassment on a bus went viral. Shimjitha, a League women’s leader in Vatakara and a former member of the Areekode Panchayat, was arrested by the Kozhikode Medical College Police from a relative’s house in Vatakara, where she had been in hiding.

Police registered the case on a complaint filed by the relatives of Deepak, a native of Govindapuram, Kozhikode, who died by suicide. Shimjitha had shared a video on social media accusing Deepak of behaving inappropriately during a bus journey. According to the family’s complaint, Deepak died by suicide due to severe mental distress after the video went viral. Police have booked Shimjitha on charges of abetment to suicide.

Efforts are underway to recover Shimjitha’s mobile phone. Investigators will examine whether the video was edited before being shared on social media.

Meanwhile, police have collected CCTV footage from the bus in which Shimjitha and Deepak were travelling on the day of the incident. The footage shows Deepak boarding the bus, but due to crowding, neither Deepak nor Shimjitha is visible later in the visuals. Bus staff told the media that they were not aware of any incident in which Deepak allegedly misbehaved with Shimjitha during the journey.
