Usha’s Surgery Completed; Surgical Scissors Stuck in Her Abdomen Removed

Kochi: The surgery to remove a surgical instrument that had remained inside Usha Joseph’s abdomen has been successfully completed at Amrita Hospital in Kochi on Friday afternoon. The instrument recovered during the procedure has been handed over to the police as part of the ongoing investigation.
The operation was carried out in the presence of two government doctors from Kalamassery Government Medical College, ensuring transparency in the process.
Usha had been suffering from severe abdominal pain and continuous bleeding following a hysterectomy performed at Alappuzha Medical College Hospital on May 10, 2021. Despite consulting multiple doctors over the years, the cause of her persistent health issues had not been identified.
Recently, after approaching the urology department in Alappuzha, doctors ordered detailed examinations, including an X-ray. The scan shockingly revealed a pair of surgical scissors inside her abdomen.
Following the discovery, Usha sought treatment at a private hospital in Ernakulam.
The Health Department has initiated strict action in connection with the incident. Dr. J. Shahida, who performed the original surgery, and Nursing Officer P. S. Dhanya have been suspended pending investigation. The decision was taken based on a preliminary inquiry report submitted by the medical college principal.
Authorities have assured that a detailed investigation will follow to determine accountability in the case.
