Saras Mela Witnesses Union of Haritha Karma Sena Members Elected to LSGD

Palakkad: The eighth day of the Kudumbashree National Saras Mela in Palakkad witnessed a rare union of 219 women elected to local self-government bodies across Kerala, all of whom share a common identity as members of the Haritha Karma Sena.

The event included a special felicitation for the elected representatives, who were chosen from local self-government institutions spanning Kasaragod to Thiruvananthapuram. Despite representing different political parties, all 219 women were felicitated equally at the mela.

Local Self Government Department (LSGD) Minister M B Rajesh shared details of the reunion in a Facebook post, describing the gathering as a significant social and political milestone. He noted that many of the women had earlier faced insults, mockery and social disdain because of their work, but ultimately earned public acceptance and electoral victory through the democratic process.

Calling the reunion a “proud moment” for Haritha Karma Sena members who have become elected representatives, the minister said their success reflected the Kerala government’s steadfast support for them. “Regardless of party affiliations, this is a victory of the Kerala government,” Rajesh wrote, adding that he had stood by them during difficult times and therefore regarded their electoral success as a personal victory as well.

The Haritha Karma Sena is Kerala’s decentralised green workforce engaged in waste management and environmental protection under the LSGD.
