Thiruvananthapuram: Malayalam actor Salim Kumar passed away on Saturday night at Amrita Hospital, Edappally, where he had been on ventilator support. He was 57. The National Award-winning actor had been away from films for some time due to liver disease and was undergoing treatment and rest when his condition deteriorated.

Opposition Leader Pinarayi Vijayan, in his condolence message, said Malayalam cinema had suffered an irreplaceable loss. He noted that Salim Kumar's journey — from mimicry artist to comedy actor to National Award winner — would remain a lasting inspiration for aspiring artists.

He is survived by his wife Sunitha and sons Chanthu and Aromal.

The body will be kept for public homage at Vadakkan Paravur Municipal Town Hall on Sunday morning at 9 am, after which it will be taken to his residence 'Laughing Villa' at 1 pm. The funeral will take place at around 5 pm.
