Kottayam: A 283-crore development project at Government Medical College, Kottayam has been completed, significantly upgrading infrastructure and patient care facilities. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan formally dedicated new facilities including a cath lab, a paramedical hostel and a surgical block built at a cost of Rs 7.88 crore to the people.

In his inaugural address, the Chief Minister said that government hospitals, once primarily relied upon by the poor, have now evolved into institutions trusted by people from all sections of society, including the affluent. He noted that public hospitals have developed the capacity and infrastructure to meet growing healthcare demands.

He recalled that when the LDF government assumed office in 2016, the public health sector faced serious challenges. Addressing these issues was among the administration’s top priorities, though financial constraints posed significant hurdles. As part of the solution, the government revived the KIIFB to mobilize resources for large-scale development projects in the state.

At the time, the initiative faced criticism and even ridicule from some quarters, he said, referring to criticism by opposition that it was merely an unrealistic dream. However, he emphasized that the government remained committed to its vision of ensuring the best possible medical treatment for all sections of society.
