"Cultural Decay": R Bindu Slams UDF Over Misogynistic Remarks Against U Prathibha

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Higher Education Minister R Bindu has strongly criticized the UDF over the derogatory remarks made against U Prathibha by one of their leaders, describing the incident as evidence of a “regressive and misogynistic mindset.”
In a statement, the minister said the remarks reflect a lack of basic understanding of gender justice and equality. “This exposes a section of leadership that has not even superficially internalized the values of gender equality,” she said.
Bindu stated that women form a foundational pillar of India’s democratic system and have secured their place in public life through sustained struggle—not as a matter of concession. She warned that such incidents serve as a reminder that regressive attitudes toward women continue to persist in society.
Rejecting attempts to dismiss the controversy as a mere “slip of the tongue,” the minister added that similar attitudes have been displayed by several UDF leaders, including younger members, even within the legislative assembly.
She further remarked that women appear to be accepted in the democratic process by such groups only out of compulsion, questioning the mindset with which they treat even women leaders within their own front.
Calling the remarks “deeply offensive,” Bindu said such attitudes are unacceptable in a progressive society and urged women voters to respond decisively to those who demean them.
