Pathanamthitta: The quiet village of Pullad in Kerala was plunged into mourning following the tragic death of Ranjitha Gopakumar, a 39- year-old nurse who perished in a plane crash while returning to the UK. Known for her compassion and deep ties to her community, Ranjitha had returned to India just four days earlier to finalise paperwork for a government nursing job, hoping to reestablish her career at home after years of working abroad.
Her short visit was meant to mark a hopeful new chapter, one in which she planned to build a new house and reunite her family, including her two children and elderly mother, in a more stable environment. But fate had other plans. After completing her official duties, Ranjitha boarded a flight from Chennai to Ahmedabad, a connecting leg of her journey back to the UK, where she had been working after a stint in Oman. Tragically, the aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff and burst into flames, claiming her life.
Ranjitha had devoted her life to caring for others, first as a nurse in Kerala’s government health service and later abroad, seeking better opportunities to support her family. Since the death of her father, she had singlehandedly raised her two children,15-year-old Indhuchoodan and 12-year-old Etheka, with the help of her mother, Thulassykuttiyamma.
Her sudden passing has left the community in shock. Neighbours and relatives continue to gather at her home in quiet solidarity, struggling to come to terms with the loss.
Minister Veena George Visits Grieving Family
Kerala Health Minister Veena George visited the grieving family of Ranjitha Gopakumar at their home in Pullad on Friday, offering her condolences and government support. The minister spent time consoling Ranjitha’s mother and children, promising educational aid for the children and care for their grandmother.
“Ranjitha’s dedication as a healthcare worker and her sacrifices as a mother are deeply moving. The loss of such a committed nurse and loving parent is heartbreaking. The government stands firmly with the family during this difficult time,” the minister stated.
Minister George instructed local authorities to ensure that all necessary support, emotional, financial, and educational, is extended to the bereaved family. Her visit brought a measure of solace to the mourning household, underscoring the state's recognition of Ranjitha’s selfless service and unwavering commitment to her family.
