Perumbavoor: A young man was beaten to death by a group of workers at a plywood company in Perumbavoor on Tuesday night, following allegations that he had attempted to steal mobile phones from their quarters. Six migrant workers, all natives of Assam, have been taken into custody in connection with the incident. The identity of the deceased, believed to also be a migrant worker from another state, has not yet been established. His body has been shifted to the mortuary of Perumbavoor Taluk Hospital.

According to preliminary information, the deceased arrived late on Tuesday night at the workers' residential quarters in Mudikkal, where the plywood company's labourers are housed. He was subsequently set upon by a group who accused him of attempting to steal their mobile phones, and was beaten with wooden logs in what police have described as a brutal assault. The commotion drew local residents to the spot, bringing the incident to light.

The accused alleged that the deceased had stolen seven mobile phones and cash amounting to one lakh rupees. However, police said these claims have not been corroborated in the course of their preliminary investigation. Further investigation is under way.
